Our favorite islands in the Mediterranean Sea

We travel to some beautiful and amazing islands in the Mediterranean Sea. These are Sicily and Sardinia in Italy, Corsica in France, Corfu and Crete in Greece, Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza in Spain, and Malta and Cyprus among others.

The position of the islands means that they enjoy a Mediterranean climate, with mild to warm, wet winters and warm to hot, dry summers.

The islands are well known because of the many camping areas, hotels, fine restaurants with sea food, wonderful historical villages and ancient cities, monuments, museums, natural sites, and many beautiful beaches.

Sicily
The beautiful island Sicily is an autonomous region of Italy with five million inhabitants. It is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, though several much smaller islands surrounding it are also considered part of Sicily. The capital of Sicily is Palermo.

Sicily is considered to be highly rich in its own unique culture, especially with regard to the arts, cuisine and architecture. Interesting ro vosit are the many beautiful cities and the beaches are celebrated.

Sardinia
Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily. The island is separated from Corsica by the Strait of Bonifacio. Sardinia is a constitutional part of Italy. The capital of the island is Cagliari.

The island is particularly famous for its beaches, but is also rich in other interesting places, such as some charming sea towns and archaeological ruins.

Corsica
Corsica is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily, Sardinia, and Cyprus. It is located west of Italy, southeast of France, and north of Sardinia. The island’s capital is Ajaccio. The island is considered one of the 26 régions of France.

Next to the beaches beautiful sites are the mountains, rivers, inland lakes, and gorges featuring rapids and waterfalls.

Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. The principal town with a population of about 30.000 preople is also named Corfu, or Kérkyra in Greek. In 2007, the city’s old town was named on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Crete
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. The capital of Crete is Heraklion. It is a location of significant ancient history and a popular tourist destination.

Its attractions include the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, and the Samaria Gorge, as well as many other natural sites, monuments, and beaches.

Majorca
Majorca is the largest island of Spain. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea and part of the Balearic Islands archipelago. Like the other Balearic Islands, Ibiza, Formentera, and Minorca the island is a popular tourist destination.

The beautiful capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands.

Minorca
Minorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean. The island is dotted with many beautiful scenic spots, like moutains, caves and beaches.

Ibiza
Ibiza is one of the Balearic Islands. The island is well-known for its summer club parties which attract large numbers of tourists, and the beautiful beaches. The largest city on the island is Ibiza.

Malta
Malta is an island nation comprising an archipelago of seven islands. Three of them are inhabited. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea in Southern Europe. Malta has a population of about 402,000 people. The capital is Valletta.

Cyprus
Cyprus is an island country situated in the eastern Mediterranean south of Turkey, west of the Levant, north of Egypt, and eastsoutheast of Greece. The island is inhabited by about 800.000 people and the capital is Nicosia.

Cyprus is the third-largest island and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, attracting over 2.4 million tourists per year.
